Kanat Skakov is a partner in Salans' Almaty office. He heads the firm’s tax practice in Kazakhstan, which provides a wide range of local and international tax advice and represents clients in tax and customs litigation. He is also active in other related legal areas such as customs, and corporate and regulatory issues.

Kanat has tax planning experience in a diverse range of industries with significant investments in Kazakhstan, including natural resources, real estate, consumer goods, and oil and gas services.

Kanat has successfully represented major oil and gas companies, international service providers to the oil & gas industry, airlines, international banks and manufacturing businesses in numerous tax and customs cases over the past nine years.  He also advises clients on issues related to investigations by Kazakhstan law enforcement agencies on tax, customs and regulatory matters.

In 2001 – 2008, Kanat taught at the Kazakh State Law Academy, later renamed into Kazakh Humanitarian Law University, where he was involved in an educational project under the EU TACIS program. In 2002, he participated in another TACIS project on development of the Customs Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Kanat graduated from the Kazakh State Law Academy (Law Degree with honours, 2000) and University College London (LL.M., 2001). He speaks Kazakh, Russian and English.
